Colin Bateman is one of Northern Ireland’s most popular and prolific novelists and screenwriters.

His debut novel, Divorcing Jack, was winner of the Betty Trask Award and adapted into the 1998 film starring David Thewlis. Since then he has published 17 novels many featuring his semi autobiographical character Dan Starkey and three children's books, which make up The Gang With No Name trilogy.

His film and TV credits includes adaptations of his novels, Divorcin Jack, Cycle of Violence, Watermelon by Marian Keyes and the original screenplay for the feature film, Wild About Harry. He is also the creator of the long running BBC television series Murphy's Law, featuring James Nesbitt.

His recent work includes a script for TV series Rebus starring Ken Stott, King Billy – the Opera and a BBC 1 documentary about himself.

“I only have two ambitions. One is to play for Liverpool. The other is to direct ‘Mohammed Maguire’. With old age and decrepit knees, I think Liverpool is unlikely, but I am determined to direct ‘Mo’.”
